Tell Congress to Say NO to the Farm Bill
The Democrats' Farm Bill is the latest example of just how broken Washington is. Under the guise of helping family farmers, the bill spends 78% of the money on things other than family farms and carries earmarks that were "airdropped" into the bill. Today the Democrats changed their own rules to stifle debate and hide the truth. This whole fiasco reminds everyone why this corrupt system has to end. We have catalogued 10 of the worst problems with the Farm Bill here, but it will take years to find them all.
Top Ten Reasons to Say No
10. 78% of the "farm bill" is not for agriculture. Only 22% is actually help for farmers - welfare should be a separate bill so we can focus on helping family farmers in the farm bill.
9. A Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) earmark forces the federal government to sell portions of the Green Mountain National Forest to a posh ski resort in Vermont
8. It subverts national sovereignty to the UN's ILO (International Labor Organization)
7. The $250 million giveaway from Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) to help the Montana-based Plum Creek Timber Company
6. Please pass the peas - Senator Kent Conrad D-N.D., included a provision that would establish full programs for dried peas, lentils, small chickpeas and large chickpeas. The 2002 farm bill supports lead to overproduction of peas
5. A $170 million salmon industry earmark quietly tucked into the bill at the last minute by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA).
4. Rich "farmers" with $2.5 million in income could still receive agriculture subsidies.
3. While feed costs for dairy are considered, no pork, poultry or beef farmers receive help for skyrocketing feed costs.
2. Subsidies for wheat and soybeans will increase even though their market price has gone up 256 percent and 164 percent, respectively, since 2002.
And the #1 reason - SUGAR! SUGAR! SUGAR!
Congressman Carney's sweet tooth would be satiated by a program that would give BIG SUGAR additional protection from imports, along with promises from the government to buy excess foreign sugar at 21 cents a pound sugar and sell it for 5 or 6 cents a pound for questionable ethanol purposes. Why does Carney care so much about sugar? How many jobs is he protecting in the district? ONE - HIS!
