Carney Supports Liberal Big Government Budget and Tax Hikes

Republicans and moderate Democrats decry budget passed by liberal Democrat Chris Carney

Dallas, PA - Siding with Nancy Pelosi and his other liberal colleagues, Chris Carney voted against middle class families and for a $3,000 per family tax increase. Other more moderate Democrats in Congress have even decried the bill noting that it represents a huge increase in the tax burden for middle class Americans.

Democratic Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL): "I can't support a budget, from either party, that raises taxes on the middle class. This bill hurts families ... by eliminating the 10-percent bracket for lower-income taxpayers, reinstating the marriage penalty and increasing taxes on small businesses and investments." (Foster Press Release, 6/5/08)

Democratic Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-AZ): "...the plan did not satisfy his concerns about reversing middle-class tax cuts in the midst of an economic slow-down. ‘...I have serious concerns and cannot support a budget that allows key tax cuts to expire,' said Mitchell." (Mitchell Press Release, 6/5/08)

This isn't the first time Chris Carney has voted for big tax increases. Last year he voted to allow the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts to expire (roll call 377), which would cost $2,698 for the average 10th District taxpayer (Sticker Shock in Pennsylvania, Heritage Foundation).

Congressional candidate Chris Hackett said, "As a congressman I will oppose tax increases. The problem in Washington isn't too little money, it's too much wasteful spending and too little responsibility. We need a Congressman who will put the hard-working taxpayers of the 10th District first."

Campaign spokesman Mark Harris commented, "If Chris Carney bore any resemblance to a moderate Democrat, he would have joined the 14 Democrats in the House who voted against this huge tax hike. Instead, Carney sided with Nancy Pelosi and the liberal leadership, as he usually does, and stuck Pennsylvania's middle class families with a higher tax bill."
