Chris Hackett Asks Carney To Stand Up For Farmers

Death Tax repeal jeopardized by liberal Democrat's vote.

Dallas - Today Chris Hackett called on Congressman Carney (PA-10) to help farmers and small businesses by turning away from the tax increase agenda Nancy Pelosi and her liberal Democrat friends in Congress are pushing.

Yesterday Carney, by refusing to permanently repeal the onerous Death Tax, voted for a $1.35 trillion tax hike on family-owned businesses and farms. The motion that Carney killed was offered as part of the Tax Collection Responsibility Act of 2007 (House Roll Call 959).

Carney's choice was simple. Instead of standing up and fighting to save Northeast Pennsylvania's family businesses, he chose to continue his allegiance to the liberal Democrat leadership by voting lock-step with them against a permanent repeal of the Death Tax.

Hackett said, "The death tax is the worst tax of all because it destroys any hope for hard-working families to pass their livelihood onto future generations. Make no mistake, in casting a vote to bring back the Death Tax, Mr. Carney ignored the fact that nearly 90 percent of small business owners favor a permanent repeal of the Death Tax."

"I'm very disappointed," Hackett continued, "that Mr. Carney would not stand up for farmers and their children. What we need is new leadership in Washington that is committed to protecting the property of our hard-working citizens. That is what I want to do."

Chris Hackett has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in September. Sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), The Pledge commits signers to "oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses ... and oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates."

ATR has offered the Pledge to all candidates for federal office since 1987. To date, President George W. Bush, 42 U.S. senators, and 197 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed the Pledge. Additionally, seven Governors and over 1,200 state legislators have signed the Pledge as well.

Carney's inability to stand up for family-owned businesses shows exactly why Americans are already fed up with the Democrat-led Congress. People in the 10th Congressional district cannot afford to let Carney and the Democrats raise their taxes and kill the future of America's small businesses.
