Carney: Too Little Too Late on Domestic Drilling No Wonder He Refused to Debate Hackett on Energy Policy
Dallas, PA – During a recent public meeting at Middle Creek Community Center, Congressman Carney finally conceded that more domestic drilling in the allocated 68 million acres of untouched government land is needed in order to end the energy crisis (The Daily Item, July 15, 2008). While challenger Chris Hackett has maintained that same position, he also knows more must be done to create a balanced, comprehensive energy plan in order to decrease foreign dependency.
Hackett responded to Carney’s new position this way: “While gas prices have skyrocketed on his watch, I’m glad Chris Carney has finally come around to the view that we need to strengthen our domestic oil supply. However, his position falls far short of what’s needed. In order to really make a dent in our dependence on foreign oil, we must explore not only the acreage already allocated, but also the outer continental shelf and Alaska. The time to start investing in our future and using every resource possible for energy solutions is now.”
Mark Harris, the Campaign Spokesperson, added “With Chris Carney’s disastrous record on dealing with rising gas prices, it’s no wonder he refuses to have a debate on energy policy. Chris Hackett has a thorough, complete, and comprehensive understanding of the current energy situation. He has advocated domestic drilling and alternative energy options this entire campaign. While Carney has recently jumped on board with a very weak response, it is too little and too late. If Carney was serious about lowering gas prices, he would support cutting the gas tax, and oil exploration in Alaska and off our coasts. And if Carney was serious about representing our district, he would agree to a series of debates about his liberal record.”
