Hackett Calls on Carney to Lift Congressional Ban on Offshore Oil
Dallas, PA – Today, President Bush lifted an executive order which banned offshore drilling. The White House estimates that there are 18 billion barrels of oil offshore, but there is still a Congressional ban that will keep this oil locked up.
On June 19, 2008, Congressman Chris Carney issued the following statement: “President Bush could overturn his father’s moratorium on drilling if he wanted. Two decades of presidents have kept this moratorium in place. Before we overhaul our bipartisan, environmental policies, we need to guarantee that American oil stays in America because we need relief for our families at the pump.” (The Express)
Chris Hackett, an ardent supporter of expanding America’s domestic energy supply, stated “With the Presidential ban lifted, it is time for Chris Carney and Congress to follow suit. It is time to end our dependency on unstable, oil rich foreign countries. In order to maintain a balanced approach to reducing energy costs, offshore drilling, new refineries, and exploration are needed to provide families relief at the pump over time. Congressman Carney got what he asked for in the President’s action, so now it’s his turn to take action.”
Hackett campaign spokesman Mark Harris added, “Offshore drilling is a necessary step toward reducing foreign dependency and rising gas prices. Chris Carney has the opportunity to assist families who are struggling with rising gas prices. By lifting the ban, steps can be taken to solve serious oil issues. Hopefully Carney will follow through for the people of our area for a change.”
